Terrantez is nearly extinct on the island of Madeira (as of 2016 the total area planted was under 5 acres). It's a highly aromatic varietal and sits right between Bual and Malvasia in terms of sugar and acid. "Wines made from terrantez typically combine sweetness and astringency in near equal measure and can be ethereal, spiritual and, at their best, magical ( Wine & Spirits 2/15/2016 )."
Tasting Notes from Mad About Madeira: "An amber/mahogany color. Complex bouquet with almonds, orange peel, and dried fruits. Some wood notes as well...Moist tobacco as well. On the palate it is quite powerful initially but quickly the razor sharp acidity takes over the show. In a good way. I don’t know how it’s possible but the balance is nothing but amazing. Probably sweeter than I think but the lime like acidity makes me think semi-dry. Dried fruits, nuts and toffee. Everlasting and refreshing aftertaste. Just a hint of bitterness which is so typical for the grape. Nectar for the gods. And for a few ordinary mortals too… Mad about Madeira impression: (94 pts)"
