Vineyard Notes: Contrada Dafara Galluzzo is on the north side of Mount Etna, within the territory of Rovittello, Castiglione di Sicilia. Of the four Contrade with which Benanti grows vines, Dafara Galluzzo is the one with the oldest soils. The matrix of the landscape belongs to the Etna geological period called Ancient Mongibello, with a genesis more than ten thousand years old. The area enjoys a mildly humid climate, good ventilation, significant day-to-night temperature swings, and no direct marine influence. The old vineyards of this district were partially covered by lava in September 1911 during an eruption that gave birth to Etna’s northeast crater, an event that pushed volcanic material in the direction of the Alcantara River. Dafara Galluzzo is particularly suited to the cultivation of Nerrello Mascalese. The terraced Nerello Mascalese shows good structure and fresh acidity. The plants are mostly young, all trained in alberello, with a planting density of about 8,000 vines per hectare and a yield of approximately 6,500 kg/ha. View Map

Winemaking Notes: Following manual harvest in late October, the grapes are fully destemmed in the cellar, where fermentation with maceration takes place in stainless steel at a controlled temperature over approximately 21 days, using only indigenous Etna yeast selected by the winery after a long direct experimentation. The wine matures in French oak tonneaux for 12 months, then in stainless steel, and then in bottle for about 10 months before release.

Tasting Notes: The color is an inviting ruby. The nose is fine, heady, and spicy with measures of red fruit. The palate is dry, medium-bodied, structured, persistent and harmonious. The Benanti Contrada Dafara Galluzzo is a versatile wine particularly suitable for red meats, game and aged cheeses.

The 2018 Etna Rosso Contrada Dafara Galluzzo is distinctly savory, notes of smoked meat and crushed ashen stone giving way to masses of balsam herbs and black raspberry. It’s silky and pliant in feel, displaying depths of mineral-tinged blackberries, savory spice and fine tannins mounting toward the close. This becomes almost salty through the youthfully chewy finale, leaving a sense of umami and gobs of black fruit to linger. The Dafara Galluzzo will require a few years of cellaring to soften.
