Vineyard Notes: Contrada Cavaliere is on the southwest side of Mount Etna, within the municipality of Santa Maria Licodia. This contrada is known for its high elevation (2,950-3,100 feet), low rainfall rate, and abundant luminosity. Generally, the southern slopes are geologically younger, thanks to the formation of soils on relatively recent lava flows. However, this contrada occupies outcroppings with soils that are far older, the evolution of which has generated rather fine but complex soils. The vineyard floor has considerable physicochemical and biological fertility that benefits from a warmer and drier climate that is not tempered by sea breezes. The diurnal shift in temperature is dramatic at Contrada Cavaliere and helps in producing wines with with well-marked aromas and varietal structure. View Map

Winemaking Notes: The grapes are manually harvested after the second week of October. In the cellar, they are destemmed and softly pressed. Fermentation takes place over about 12 days in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature, using a specific autochthonous yeast selected in the vineyard by Benanti after years research and experimentation. The wine is left to mature in the tank on its fine lees with periodic stirrings for 12 months. The wine then spends 6 months in the bottle before it is released. It is filtered without animal products.

Tasting Notes: The aromas are intense, ample and delicate, with hints of orange blossom and ripe apple. Contrada Cavaliere Bianco is dry on the palate and mineral. It shows pleasant acidity and an aromatic persistence of anise and almond on the finish. The wine pairs well with all fish-based dishes, even elaborate ones.

So pretty and perfumed, the 2018 Etna Bianco Contrada Cavaliere blossoms with notes of apricot and pear, yellow florals and hints of fresh oregano. It’s especially lifted and mineral in style, presenting a crunchy display of tart orchard fruits and inner herbal notes. It finishes clean, resonating on hints of crisp Granny Smith apples and ginger. The 2018 Cavaliere steps lightly, but it makes a lasting impression.

This is the second edition of this exciting new white from the great Sicilian volcano. The Benanti 2018 Etna Bianco Contrada Cavaliere (with 5,300 bottles released) shows an open-knit personality with peach, preserved lemon, crushed stone and candied almond. The Contrada Cavaliere is located on the southwest side of Etna in the village of Santa Maria di Licodia, with vines at 950 meters in altitude. This is a fresh, medium-weight white with a nice mix of primary fruit and mineral definition.
