Populis was born from the desire to make lighthearted, naturally made, and extremely drinkable wines from organically farmed, historic vineyard sites throughout Northern California. The 2020 Populis Rosé is a blend of about 70% Carignane direct press, 30% Zinfandel direct press, and a splash of muscat. It is light and super pretty but showing a bit more stuffing than the 2019 vintage.

Vineyard Sources: Venturi Vineyard is located just north of Ukiah, in the Calpella Valley, on predominantly Pinole gravelly loam soils. These highly regarded soils contain a mixture of sandstone, shale, and quartz formed from alluvial flows. Fox Vineyard is located in the historic Lodi AVA, and the vines were planted in 1964 on their own roots. The Ceccini Vineyard is located in Contra-Costa County and feels the strong cooling influence of the California’s Central Valley Delta system.

Farming: Larry Venturi is a 3rd generation farmer tending to vines planted on his family's historic site in Calpella (Ukiah). Planted in the late 1940’s, his nearly 70 year-old vineyard is one of California’s oldest sources of organic Sauvignon Blanc. The Fox vineyard is farmed by Baubie Fox, who tends the 66 year old own-rooted vines with zero herbicide or fungicide treatments. Julien Erggelet farms the Cecchini organically using restorative and permaculture fundamentals and techniques.

Vinification: Whole clusters were pressed directly. Each variety was fermented separately. The final blend was put together in after several months of lees aging. No fining or filtration took place. The total SO2 is low.

Tasting Notes: Freshness defines this dry-style rosé, while the full malolactic fermentation balances this freshness with an unctuous mouthfeel and length. The Carignane brings a savory and structured foundation to the wine. The Zinfandel contributes lightness, midpalate, and loads of stone fruit. And finally, the Muscat elevates the aromas and palate with its aromatic character.
