Barrel X is the legend; it’s Lauer’s platonic ideal of what a delicately off-dry Saar Riesling should be.
Winemaking Notes: Florian is a minimalist in their cellar. The only interventions are temperature control, a clarification prior to fermentation, and battonage (stirring of the lees). The grapes ferment spontaneously with native yeast. Lees contact is allowed as well as some partial malolactic fermentation. As he describes it, "I don't look for malo but I don't avoid try to avoid it. It just happens in parallel." This approach takes the edge out of the acidity, and if done with care, doesn’t add simplifying lactic notes.
Tasting Notes: "The 2018er Saar Riesling Feinherb Barrel X comes half from Estate vineyards and half from purchased fruit, and was fermented down to 20g/l of residual sugar. It offers an attractive nose of grapefruit, apple, greengage and aniseed herbs. The wine coats the palate with nice and clean yellow peach and pear. It remains light-weighted and proves delightfully juicy and only mildly acidic in the medium-long finish. This is not deeply complex but utterly easy to understand and enjoy." - Mosel Fine Wines 6/28/2019
Vintage Notes: "Florian Lauer managed to produce a great collection in 2018. While the wines have less acidity and can be sometimes riper than in recent vintages, his wines remain impeccably well balanced. The off-dry wines are probably the stars of the collection in 2018, especially if you are partial to racy balance and elegance." - Mosel Fine Wines 6/28/2019
89pts (2017 Vintage) Wine Spectator 6/15/2019
"A soft version, featuring an elegant profile and flavors of white raspberry, ripe apple and apricot, with hints of graphite, all linked by prominent acidity that brings out the balance. Charming finish."
