This pure Nerello Mascalese comes from ungrafted vines in contrada Zottorinoto, in the section Chiusa Spagnola, situated lower in the valley floor. It is a bit hidden in an amphitheater surrounded by lava. Planted around 1925 at a lower altitude (620 meters asl), this unique vineyard produces profound, tannic wine.
Appellation Notes: Some of Frank's vineyards are too high in elevation for the Etna DOP, so he uses the Terre Siciliane IGT for the sake of uniformity.
Winemaking Notes: Grapes were destemmed and lightly crushed before a 60-day skin fermentation with wild yeast in neutral epoxy tanks. Wine was not fined. It was filtered before bottling with cartridges of 5 micron. No sulfites were added.
Tasting Notes: Vibrant, fruity notes of strawberry and raspberry. Fresh, juicy, with a hint of spice, the 2016 CS is a deep, beautifully balanced vintage.
