Winemaking Notes: The Villa Creek 2016 High Road co-fermented in 3 lots with 45% whole clusters. After careful hand sorting, the grapes went through 3-5 days of maceration followed by spontaneous fermentation. They then spent 21-30 days on the skins before being basket pressed.

Vintage Notes: Ample winter rain was not enough to reach average numbers or bring California out of the 5 year drought. A cold winter was followed by a warm February. Bud break was a bit early and a late frost led to some frost in our lower blocks. Summer was consistently warm as was the very end of the growing season. Conditions were almost optimal for a ripe round vintage.

Tasting Notes: A swirl of the glass reveals a perfumed bouquet that is more a gentle caress than a slap on the cheek. The palate is graceful and a little bit edgy with layers of cassis, tobacco, mint. A dusting of white pepper mingles with the seamless tannins. Give this one a year to relax and this sensual elixir will keep giving for years.

Deep-pitched cassis, cherry preserve and incense aromas are complemented by a suave floral note and a hint of five-spice powder. Rich but energetic as well, showing superb focus and spicy thrust to the densely packed dark berry liqueur and violet pastille flavors. Deftly balances richness and vivacity and betrays no rough edges. Finishes on a sexy floral note, displaying resonating dark berry character, fine-grained tannins and striking persistence.
