Elio Altare first experimented with French oak on the Barbera grapes from their estate Larigi parcel in La Morra. Elio named the wine Langhe Rosso instead of Barbera d'Alba because using barrique at the time (late 1970s) was revolutionary. People wouldn't have understood the wine if labeled Barbera d'Alba. Today this tradition continues with the wine named simply Langhe Rosso, Larigi.

Winemaking Notes: The grapes are harvested by hand. The grapes macerate with their skins at a controlled temperature in rotary fermenters for 3-4 days. The wine ages in 100% new French oak barrels for 18 months. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeast as does the malolactic fermentation. The wine is not fined, filtered, or clarified. No substances that could modify the color or the structure of the wine is ever used.

Vineyard Notes: Larigi was planted in 1948. The Barbera vines sit at the top of the hill beside the estate home with a southern-southeastern exposure. Farming is organic. Silvia only uses copper and copper sulfate if strictly necessary. Organic cow manure from their mountain cows is used to fertilize the vines.

Vintage Notes: 2016 was a long and slow vintage. Harvest happened later than usual, but the slow and late ripening resulted in balanced wine with an excellent structure.

    The 2016 Langhe Larigi, a pure expression of Barbera from old vines and with only 2,500 bottles produced, is a beautiful wine with bright ripeness and lush fruit. Semi-crunchy in nature, it also has some muscle under the hood with a 15.5% alcohol content. The finish is fresh and bright. Try it with the famous local tajarin (rich egg-yolk pasta), without giving a second thought to all that cholesterol and the volume of alcohol you are consuming. By the way, Elio Altare is now 69 years old, and he counts 54 vintages under his belt.

    Altare's 2016 Larigi is a total stunner. Rich and explosive on the palate, with tremendous fruit richness, the 2016 is positively stellar. Succulent dark cherry, plum, chocolate, spice and new leather build as this sexy Barbera shows off its super-distinctive personality. As delicious as the Larigi is today, it also needs a number of years to be at its best. Indeed, Larigi boasts one of the most impressive track records in Piedmont. The 2016 will soon take its place as one of the greatest Larigis ever made. It is every bit that special.
