Wine Notes: The Madiniere cuvée—named after a Rhône tributary—is pure Syrah from the Côte Brune in the northernmost swath of the appellation. The soils here are rich in iron and dominated by schist. The wine is subsequently more chiseled than Bassenon grown on gneiss and granite—though it certainly doesn’t lack for power. This 2016 combines plush fruit and a sense of stony rigor. Its rugged tannins beckon for a bit of patience.

Vintage Notes: Although oceans of purple prose were spilled in the press about the 2015 vintage in the Northern Rhône, most growers here remark that 2016 is perhaps even greater. While it may lack the sheer tannic heft and dazzling concentration of 2015, 2016 offers superior elegance—a more fine-grained glimpse into the terroir—while sacrificing nothing in terms of density and longevity. For a grower like Cuilleron, who even with his newfound lighter touch still makes wines of relative muscle, 2016 allowed for wines of impressive balance.

"2016 is a terrific vintage for the Northern Rhône. The wines shine for their purity, elegance, and balance, while still possessing good concentration and depth of fruit...The wines don’t have the sheer depth of fruit or grandeur of the 2015s nor the sunny exuberance of the 2017s, but they have beautiful aromatics, medium to full-bodied mouthfeels, ripe tannins, healthy acidities, and classic, transparent characters. These are undoubtedly better than the 2014s, 2013s, and 2012s, and possibly even the 2011s. In addition, most of the wines will be approachable in their youth yet evolve gracefully on their purity and balance." - Jeb Dunnuck 12/20/2018

"High-pitched, minerally dark berry and floral scents are complicated by suggestions of black pepper and allspice. Offers intense, spice-laced blackberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors that deepen and pick up a sweet hint of salty olive with air. The lively, emphatically fruity finish displays impressive clarity and supple, even tannins that add shape and gentle grip."

(made entirely from Côte Brune fruit and raised in 50% new oak barrels) Inky ruby. Ripe blackberry and cherry aromas are complemented by peppery spice, olive and pungent floral accents. Supple, appealingly sweet and deeply concentrated black and blue fruit flavors become more energetic and spicier with air, and a smoky mineral element adds back-end lift and cut. Chewy tannins add grip to a very long, floral-dominated finish that leaves a subtle licorice note behind.
