Winemaking Notes: Grapes are manually harvested. Whole clusters are gently pressed in order to extract only the first and cleanest part of the must, which is immediately pumped to a stainless steel vat where most solids and heavy parts decant overnight. In the morning, the upper part is racked off the bottom to another stainless steel tank. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeast. The Galea Friulano matures on its fine lees for 24 months to avoid reductive effects and to gain the stabilization and anti-oxidative benefits that these natural components bring. The wine is bottled with a light filtration, meant only to eliminate the cloudiness brought by the floating lees. The total SO2 is 50 mg/L.
Tasting Notes: Galea Friulano shows deep and earthy aromas. Expect a wide palate showcasing almonds, sunburned stones, honey, and anice. The longer lees maturation drives the wine's aromatic expression from primary, variety-related aromas to a deeper, more terroir-driven character.
Vineyard Notes: Galea is one of i Clivi's two vineyard crus. Galea is located in Corno di Rosazzo along the Slovenian border. The vineyard is planted to 70-year-old vines.
Brazan Friulano vs Galea Friulano: The two wines are made with the same grape variety and mostly the same vinification techniques (18 months on lees versus 24 months); the only difference is the terroir. Drier and sun-kissed, the Galea Vineyard has earthy flavors and a minerality of baked stones. Humid and with a greater diurnal variation, the Brazan Vineyard has hydrocarbonic aromas and a minerality of salty sea air.
