Winemaking Notes: The grapes of this 2017 Montepulciano were harvested by hand in mid September from 6 year old vines. The bunches were immediately destemmed, crushed in the hydraulic press (basket press) and the must was transferred into the amphorae where it remained in contact with the skins through the end of the first fermentation (which lasted 12 days). With the start of fermentation, the cap was softly soaked once a day. At the end of the primary fermentation, the wine was separated/racked from the skins and put back into amphorae where it remained through the completion of the malolactic fermentation. After which it was again racked one more time and put back into the amphorae to rest only on the fine lees. The wine was neither fined or filtered before bottling.
Tasting Notes: Youthfully concentrated with dark fruit and brisk, intense tannins that give it a rich, tarry, impacted feel. Nose exhibits bramble, mulberry and elderberry with a light hint of tar and mocha. There’s plenty of energy in the fruit to keep it fresh as those tannins mellow. For the cellar.
