Vineyard Notes: Grapes for this wine are grown in the Ormeggio, Castagnola, and Belvedere vineyards in Lessona in the Orolungo subregion. They are also grown in the 45-90-year-old Madonna degli Angeli Vineyard in Brusnengo in the Forte subregion (it is included in the Bramaterra D.O.C). In the Lessona vineyards, soils comprise of marine sands from the pliocene period on igneous rock, mixed with more recent glacial sediment. The soil is acidic, rich in minerals and trace elements including iron, manganese, aluminum and zinc. Soils in the Madonna degli Angeli Vineyard are composed of pebbles on a base of igneous rock which is close to the surface and veined with china clay.
Winemaking Notes: The grapes are sorted while on the conveyor belt, then destemmed and gently pressed, then fed by gravity into the fermentation tank. Skin maceration lasts for 12 hours before being fermented in stainless steel vats. The wine then remains in contact with the lees for four months. The wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation or sees oak.
Tasting Notes: Mineral, fresh, and savory. A beautiful salmon color, the wine exhibits scents of rose petal and strawberry. Cantaloupe and ripe peach flavors evolve into a vivid, pink grapefruit-like, citrus acidity in the mid-palate. The finish is long, and dry. Ripe strawberry flavors are complemented by minerality and a little pepper.
Michael Austin for Chicago Tribune 6/2017
"Made primarily of Nebbiolo, for body and structure, with some Vespolina, for freshness and acidity, the wine features aromas of ripe strawberries, rose petals and dried herbs, plus flavors of rich fruit balanced by tart acidity and minerality."
