Vineyard Notes: Serra della Contessa is produced from the Contrada Monte Serra, which is the monopole vineyard located right outside the winery in Viagrande. This bottling is sourced from vines averaging over 100 years in age. Many are ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines as the volcanic and sandy soils have allowed the ungrafted vines to remain free of disease. The vines are trained with the free standing bush (“alberello”) system.

Winemaking Notes: Grapes are manually harvested between late Sepember and early October and softly pressed. Fermentation occurs at a controlled temperature in stainless steel vats with a 20-days long maceration. Patented selected indigenous yeasts are used. The maturation occurs in large barrels of French oak for about 24 months and then continues in stainless steel tanks. The wine refines in the bottle for 6-9 months.

About the Name: The name Serra della Contessa appeared for the first time in a very old notarial document written in Latin and dating back to the year 1474.

A fresh, supple red, featuring enticing violet, spice box and juniper accents to the pure note of crushed cherry fruit. Finely meshed and medium-bodied, with sculpted tannins and a lingering tang of mineral on the finish. Drink now through 2026.

Perfumed violet, rose and red cherry. Profoundly rich and round but still very young, with chewy, slightly tough tannins and lots of vibrant acidity extending the mineral red cherry flavors on the back end. Made from the south-eastern slope of Mount Etna from very old vines planted at about 500 meters above sea level. Well done; this is potentially very great.
