Vineyard Notes: The vineyards are farmed organically and sustainably. Currently (as of 2017) about 80% of his wines are made from estate fruit. Sulfur is sprayed to protect against mildew. Irrigation is limited and mainly used to help the young vines stay healthy. The crop loads reflect the natural balance of the vine. The grapes are harvested at the peak of ripeness to produce wines that are rich and concentrated.

2016 Vintage Notes from Vinous 9/2018: “Trevisan’s 2016s display the usual depth of flavor and velvety texture for which his wines are known, but they also show an element of aromatic freshness and detail as well as energy on the palate that makes them extremely pleasant to drink, even now.”

Winemaking Notes: In the cellar, Matt uses a healthy balance of art and science. Grapes co-ferment to achieve balance and complex flavors. Fermentation tanks are not heated or cooled as Matt let’s the wines evolve naturally. Sulfites are rarely added before bottling.

Aging: 18 months in 2,200-liter new French oak foudre, 500-liter neutral barrels, and 350-liter casks

Tasting Notes: Enjoy dark fruit, roasted meat, and subtle hints of cinnamon spice. It is a medium to heavy weight but not over the top; juicy, soft. The tannins are there and should develop nicely over the next 3-7 years.

    Rating: 96 (9/1/2018)

Exotically perfumed aromas of black and blue fruit preserves, licorice candy, five-spice powder and cola, complicated by a suave floral oil nuance. Broad and deeply concentrated on the palate, offering sweet, mineral-tinged cassis and cherry compote flavors along with suggestions of candied violet and cola. Stains the palate and shows superb power and spicy lift on an extremely long, youthfully tannic finish that emphatically repeats the spice and floral notes.

The Syrah-dominated 2016 Nemesis (there’s 9% Mourvèdre and 4% Grenache) is a richer, dense, full-bodied effort that offers plenty of pepper and gaminess as well as darker black fruits and smoke. Aged 18 months in a mix of a new foudre, new casks, and neutral barrels, it’s textured, layered, and beautifully concentrated.
