Tasting Notes: This 2017 Ex Umbris Syrah shows deep purple hues in the glass and mouthwatering aromas of candied plum and fresh raspberry. The slight slate and vanilla notes are interlaced with juicy flavors of blackberry jam, Bing cherry compote and subtle hints of cocoa nib. This is a deliciously full-bodied, yet elegantly structured Syrah that is enjoyable now. For cellaring time, we suggest drinking now through 2025.

About the Wine: This wine was introduced as a one-time bottling in 2002 after a wild fire struck the vineyard’s surrounding hillsides. The residual ash and smoke resonated in the Syrah grapes, creating a very memorable wine. Year after year, Owen Roe has produced a Syrah to keep the story alive. Enjoy this bold Syrah comprised from several exceptional vineyards in the Yakima Valleys.

Very fresh scents of blackberry, white pepper, licorice and violet. A juicy, brisk, very pretty style of Syrah with terrific floral lift to its penetrating dark raspberry and spice flavors. Focused but quite tight and backward, showing no easy sweetness. Finishes with suave, fine-grained tannins and lovely sneaky length.

This wine is a perennial value. The 2017 Syrah Ex Umbris, a blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, brought up in neutral oak, gives up terrific amounts of smoky black and blue fruits, ground pepper, bouquet garni, and bacon fat. It's rounded, plush, and straight-up delicious.
