Winemaking Notes: The grapes for this 2015 Pinot Noir were sourced from the Temperance Hill vineyard in the Willamette Valley, sourced from 35 year old vines that have been dry-farmed using organic practices. The final weeks before the 2015 harvest saw a break in the heat wave, slowing the accumulation of sugars and allowing the grapes to preserve their acidity. Grapes were left to macerate with their skins for 21 days, seeing a twice-daily pumpover for three days, followed by a twice-daily punchdown. Wine then saw 18 months in neutral French oak.

Tasting Notes: While a classic Temperance nose of cedar and green tobacco is certainly evident in this vintage, it is a bit less pronounced, and makes way for more fruit to show through. Black, red and sour cherry with raspberry and other red and black fruits on the midpalate which continues through to the finish..

A more elegant nose derives much more from the red side of the fruit spectrum where additional nuances of spice and floral elements add breadth. There is a sleek and relatively refined texture to the mid-palate of the medium weight flavors that conclude in a dusty, balanced and lingering finish. This too is deceptively structured as the mid-palate seems approachable yet the density of the fine but firm tannins is unmistakable evidence that at least some patience is advisable.

    Rating: 94 (2/25/2018)

Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Reserved, but pleasant aromas of red cherry and red berry, spice and mulch. Light to mid weight in style featuring juicy red cherry and berry flavors with a hint of spice and tobacco. Dreamy balance, with gentle tannins and a quenching finish. Rather elegant and balletic, but highly flavorful, with understated Pinot extravagance.

    Rating: 91 (8/31/2018)

The 2015 Pinot Noir Temperance Hill is pale to medium ruby in color with an earthy nose of tar, scorched earth and stewed black tea over a core of sour cherry fruit and cola. Light to medium-bodied, it has great intensity of ripe red fruits with gobs of juicy acidity and firm, grainy tannins, finishing long with lovely floral notes.
