Vineyard Notes: All vineyards are cane pruned on 3 and 4 cane VSP trellising. The soils of the lower Wairau Valley Home Block provide ripe, complex flavors and pungent aromatics. The naturally low cropping Redwood Hills provides fruit with elegance, minerality and length. The Alabama Rd Vineyard is a warm, sheltered site. The fruit ripens early and expresses great intensity of flavor with stone fruit and citrus characters coming to the fore.
Winemaking Notes: The fruit was harvested in the cool of the morning and transferred to the winery where most of it underwent temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks using carefully selected yeast cultures. The fruit from the Seaside Block in the Wairau Bar Home Vineyard was whole bunch pressed directly to barrel where it underwent indigenous yeast fermentation and matured on lees for 9 months. This adds a rich textural element to the wine.
Tasting Notes: Koha Sauvignon Blanc has pungent aromas of citrus, melon, and sage with lively passion fruit and floral notes adding allure and complexity. A medium-bodied palate with stone fruit and tropical flavors leads to a fresh citrus finish. The barrel portion adds some creamy texture and a hint of vanilla. Roast chicken crusted with oregano and thyme is always a classic match for fuller-bodied Sauvignon Blancs. For a flavor sensation try it with grilled scallops with an anchovy, mint, and coriander dressing.
