Vineyard Notes: The Chardonnay is planted predominantly on the west side of the estate where they have several different types of sandy soils. Because the west side receives the brunt of brutal ocean winds and has only poor soils, this Chardonnay always captures the vibrancy, minerality, and concentrated flavors that are hallmarks of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation.

Winemaking Notes: Harvest was manual. The grapes were gently whole cluster pressed, cold settled overnight and transferred by gravity to neutral French oak barrels (10 to 20 years old) for fermentation. Malolactic fermentation did not take place. Sur lie aging occurred without any lees disturbance. Yields were 2.4 lbs/vine (2.2 tons/acre).

Tasting Notes: Melville Chardonnay has intriguing aromatics of grilled lemon, honeysuckle and pear. On the palate, notes of fresh ginger, kumquat and dried straw mingle with weightier impressions of sourdough toast, caramel and roasted marshmallow. The mouthfeel is velvety, with a touch of oiliness on the midpalate along with an energetic streak of acidity that anchors a voluptuous and polished finish.

The 2015 Chardonnay Estate (Sta. Rita Hills) has developed a good bit of flavor complexity over the last year. Orchard fruit, yellow flowers, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes all develop in the glass. The 2015 has picked an element of reduction that was not present in the wine a year ago. That is more an observation rather than a critique, but also a reminder of the style Greg Brewer favored when he was the winemaker here.

The 2015 Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills is a richer white, especially in the vintage. Orange blossom, buttered pineapple, and salted apple notes all emerge from the glass, and it's nicely textured on the palate with plenty of fruit and a good finish. It’s going to keep for a decade.
