Terroir: The Agrapart Avizoise Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is a cuvée from their oldest vines (60 years old) on their best Grand Cru parcels in Avize: Robarts and Gros Yeux (Big Eyes). The soils have a strong presence of clay over a limestone subsoil. It’s a wine that expresses a very particular terroir, but as Agrapart points out, "it’s only one facet of the terroir of Avize." Avize has two main terroirs; one is very chalky and the other is a clay and limestone mix. Both of the parcels used for Avizoise have clay and limestone soils. The resulting Champagne has powerful minerality with a dense and rich core.

Winemaking Notes: Grapes are manually harvested and pressed with a Coquard press. Fermentation occurs naturally with native yeast in steel tanks and demi-muids. Avizoise completes malolactic fermentation. It is bottled without fining or filtration under cork rather than capsule for the second fermentation. Avizoise ages on the lees between 72 and 84 months. Riddling is manual. Wine is disgorged 60 days prior to release. Dosage is limited to 5 grams per liter. Total sulfites in the wine are less than 50 mg/L.

    Rating: 94 (12/1/2017)

The 2011 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs L'Avizoise Grand Cru has more than enough brawn and depth to fill out its frame. The richness of fruit of this clay-rich site, along with the flavor complexity that is gained through aging on the cork results in a rich, vinous Champagne built on layers of flavor and vertical structure. As good as the 2011 is today, I would prefer to drink it on the earlier side given the challenges that 2011 presented. This is a superb wine for the year and a real revelation. Old vines in the Les Robarts and La Voie d’Epernay lieu-dits inform the Avizoise. Disgorged: May 2017. Dosage is 5 grams per liter.
