Terroir: Bernabeleva Navaherreros is the essence of San Martín Garnacha. San Martín de Valdeiglesias is located at the northwestern corner of the Viños de Madrid appellation, close to the Sierra de Gredos. The high elevation, deep soils of sand and granite, and old vines (40-60+ years) produces Garnacha that tastes unlike any other region. Electric fuchsia in color, Navaherreros contains bright acidity, perfumed fruit, and deep minerality. It is a clean and linear Garnacha with a flavorful and savory midpalate. It has an incredible Pinot-like lightness and finesse. Gripping tannins are balanced by a wondrous elegance.

Vinification: This is produced with partial whole clusters. The various vineyards are fermented with indigenous yeast in concrete, old wood or stainless steel based on the qualities of the site. The oak vats are 5,000 and 10,000 liters. The wine matures for one year in used French oak barrels of different sizes before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

"The expressive and floral 2016 Navaherreros Garnacha de Bernabeleva shows its true colors from minute one. It has an elegant and fresh personality, with a mixture of red fruit, lavender, wild flowers, pine trees and Mediterranean forest. It's silky and juicy, with unnoticeable tannins. This has to be the finest vintage of this wine to date."

    The 2015 Navaherreros Garnacha de Bernabeleva was sourced from different plots of old vines from their own organically farmed vineyards on sandy granite soils at varying altitudes between 700 and 840 meters altitude. It fermented with indigenous yeasts with part of full clusters in 5,000- and 10,000-liter oak vats followed by one year in oak barrels of different sizes. As I often see in the whites from Albillo, this warmer year somehow produced a fresher wine here, with a sensation of harmony and subtleness I didn't see in 2014, which on paper was a cooler vintage. But, sometimes in cooler vintages grapes ripen slowly and burn more acidity. Floral and aromatic, this is delicious, with silky tannins, deep flavors and a long finish. It's amazing how tasty the finish can get with these granite soils.
