Vintage Notes: 2016 presents the same basic architecture of 2015, with all the proportions a bit finer. The wines are bouncier and airier, the acids razor-sharp and the fruit simply saturating.

(91-92)pts (2017 Vintage) Wine Advocate 4/27/2018 "The sample of the 2017 Ayler Riesling "Fass 25" shows an intensely aromatic yet still fresh and slatey bouquet of great finesse and class. It is still a bit yeasty, but the wine is clearly shining through. Creamy, intense and well-structured, with lovely grip and lush, ripe Riesling fruit, this is a charming and mouth-filling Riesling that already drinks great."

    The 2016er Ayler Fass 25 comes from the Scheidterberg and Rauberg hills, two secondary steep hills in Ayl. It develops a very nice nose of grapefruit zest, lavender, Provence herbs and smoky slate. The wine is nicely balanced and smooth on the palate and leaves a crisp and delicately creamy feel in the medium-long finish. Now-2021

    Sourced from the estate’s holdings in the Scheidterberg and Rauberg, this managed to finish well within the range of legal Trockenheit, although, in keeping with recent Lauer conventions, explicit mention of the wine’s degree of dryness appears only on the winery’s price list, not the label, which instead bears a tiny “T” to signify in effect “dry-, or at least almost dry-tasting.” Grapefruit rind and quarry dust combine for a pungent nose, and the dense, full palate delivers juicy fresh grapefruit and white peach complemented by zesty piquancy and stone suffusion, leading into a sustained finish invigorating in its evocation of peach fuzz prickle.

    The 2016 Ayler Riesling "Fass 25" is sourced in steep, east- and west-facing vineyards with blue-gray slate soils. The wine opens with a clear, deep and flinty bouquet with discreet but complex and concentrated spicy Riesling fruit that is perfectly interwoven with smoky/stony notes—fabulous! The palate is medium-bodied, dry, tight, very mineral, straight, long and complex. This is an exciting Riesling with a very promising finish. I'd cellar this excellent Riesling for at least 5 to 7 years. The wine fermented down to 6.8 grams of residual sugar (12% alcohol). There is also a bone-dry version of this wine (Fass 2) that was bottled with a little bit more than two grams of residual sugar.
