Alvaro acquired his first vineyard, Finca Dofí, in 1990. Like L’Ermita, Dofí combines power and richness with great breed and finesse. In most Priorat tastings that do not include L’Ermita, Dofí is the clear winner. Maceration lasts for 25 days and fermentation takes place in oak vats. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel. Wine is not filtered but is fined with egg whites. Biodynamic practices are used in the vineyard.

(95-97)pts (2016 Vintage) Wine Advocate 4/27/2018
"It's a wine that really stands out among the 2016s—explosive and long, with concentration and elegance. This could very well become the finest Dofí to date."

95pts (2016 Vintage) Vinous 4/25/2019
"A highly perfumed and impressively complex bouquet displays an array of ripe red/blue fruits, exotic spices, licorice candy, vanilla, cola and smoky minerals, with a suave floral topnote that gains strength with air. Stains the palate with sweet black raspberry, cherry-cola, star anise, mocha and floral pastille flavors that are braced and lifted by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows outstanding clarity and mineral cut on the long, floral-dominated finish, which is given shape and final grip by fine-grained, even tannins. This wine's blend of richness and vivacity is really impressive."

Alvaro Palacios Finca Dofí 2015 is grown on brown slate. Deep purple with pink rim. Impressively powerful, with a burst of black fruits, fresh, well-balanced, with a refined texture. A rasp of tannin gives structure, and a burst of juice explodes on the finish. An edge of liquorice and wild herbs to the finish. Very long, very fresh.

The 2015 Finca Dofí is mostly Garnacha with a 4% pinch of Cariñena and some white grapes from the vineyard that names it. Although there are some differences, mainly in the fringes and extremes, most of the soils from Priorat are very similar, with decomposed slate called "llicorella." Most of Palacios's wines are produced in a very similar way, with natural fermentation of destemmed and crushed grapes in oak vats and élevage in oak casks—in this case, larger bocoys and foudres—for 16 months. This wine has gained in drinkability since 2010-2011, and this lighter vintage feels even more approachable, with very clean flavors and unnoticeable tannins. It finishes very tasty and with subtle earthiness.
  • The Wine Spectator
    Rating: 92 (5/31/2018)

Round and generous, this toasty red offers flavors of cherry, plum and baking spices, showing depth. Light, firm tannins and fresh acidity keep this focused. A spicy, gentle wine, with deceptive length. Drink now through 2025.

Big strong, stewy, dark stuff. The tannins are acceptably bitter but not starkly so, and the rather thick fruit does have warm, baked aromas peeping through, so it works pretty well. [#22 on Decanter's World's Best Grenache Buys]

    Rating: 95 (4/25/2019)

Powerful, mineral-accented red and dark berry, cherry liqueur and licorice aromas are complicated by suggestions of incense and exotic spices. Deeply concentrated but lively as well, offering palate-staining black raspberry, bitter cherry, fruitcake and floral pastille flavors that show outstanding clarity and mineral thrust. Finishes extremely long and precise, with resonating floral, spice and mineral qualities and youthfully gripping tannins. By all means give this still-young wine some cellar time.
