Robert M. Parker, JR (on Cortijo Rioja): "I cannot think of another Rioja at this price level that offers this much character and fruit."

Cortijo means cottage or shack, a reference to the fact that shacks, often times, make better wine than most high-flown Chateaux in Rioja. The philosophy of Cortijo is simple yet effective: to make better wine, one must harvest better grapes. Cortijo improves the quality of its wines by doing a better job in the vineyards.

Vineyard Notes: The fifteen vineyard parcels that go into the making of this great expression of Rioja Alta are located in two distinct towns: Briones and Arenzana. The soils in Briones are thin red clay and sandy limestone with small particles of thin clay. The soils in Arenzana are sandy with alluvial sediment.

Winemaking Notes: The cold soak lasts for five days and is done to enhance the color and flavor. Once fermentation takes place, the Tempranillo spend another 10 days in contact with its skins to extract all beneficial color and tannins. 50% of the wine is aged for 2-3 months in 3-year-old French oak barrels and 50% in stainless steel tanks.

Tasting Notes: The emphasis is in the fruit flavors and not the oak. Juicy red fruit and white pepper aromas show on the nose. There is good energy and a hint of smokiness. Subtle tannins give shape to a tangy, persistent finish that leaves a raspberry note behind.

Pairing Suggestions: The fresh, pure character of Cortijo Rioja makes this wine extremely versatile. Enjoy a glass with white meat or flaky fish like cod. This has the fruit and acidity to match with red meat as well.

Pungent, herb-tinged cherry and red currant scents are complemented by smoky mineral and peppery spice nuances. Sappy and focused on the palate, offering juicy red berry, bitter cherry and lavender flavors that show good energy and back-end cut. Finishes spicy and long, the easygoing tannins adding grip.
