Terroir: The Isole e Olena estate is located on the western slope of the Chianti Classico hills, which gets the influence of the breeze from the Mediterranean resulting in a milder climate. The vineyards are facing mostly southwest at an elevation between 350 to 480 meters above see level. The soil is a combination of clay-shale (galestro) and clay-limestone (alberese). The vines are 48 years or younger.
Vintage: Following a cold and wet autumn, severe winter temperature and heavy spring rains resulted in late budbreaking and flowering, luckily with good fruit set and regular clusters. July was hot, August saw cooler temperature and some rain, but the greatness of this vintage was really shaped by September and October with dry, clear days, extremely bright light and cool nights.
Vinification: Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc are fermented in open top oak vats. Maceration lasts three to four weeks with delestage and punching down. The Syrah undergoes a short pre-fermentation cold soaking in stainless steel with 2 weeks of maceration time; it is then pressed into barrels with some residual sugar to ferment dry very slowly. Only indigenous yeast are used. The wine spends 2 years in barriques and 2 years in casks. It has been released after 4 years of bottle aging.
Wine Advocate 4/2017
"Paolo De Marchi made a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione in 2006 and again in 2010. Unlike his peers, De Marchi waits five years before releasing his Gran Selezione. (By law a wine labelled Gran Selezione must age for a minimum of 30 months.)"
