Grape Source: The Pinot Noir grapes for the Lucy Rosé come from the Pisoni family’s vineyards in the cold, windy Santa Lucia Highlands appellation of California’s central coast. The vines are hand farmed, and the utmost care and attention is given to each cluster.
Winemaking Notes: Lucy Pinot Noir Rosé is made using two traditional methods: whole cluster pressing and saignée. The whole cluster pressing is very gentle and brings out only limited color. The saignée technique is when the berries are placed in a tank for a few hours to gain a little bit more color. The juice is transferred into neutral wood barrels. Fermenting in neutral barrels at cool temperature provides texture and intensity to the wine and preserves the delicate aromatics. Following fermentation, the wine matures 3-4 months before bottling.
When is a wine more than a wine? Perhaps when that wine serves a higher purpose – giving both enjoyment and support to an important cause. Lucy Rosé came to life in 2003 when winemaker Jeff Pisoni made just two precious barrels. The delicious results led the family to make more of the pretty-in-pink wine, and to do so for a worthy cause. The lovely rosy color reminded them of the iconic pink ribbon that symbolizes breast cancer awareness. A perfect pairing – a lovely wine with a heart – the Pisoni family decided to donate $1 of every bottle sold to combating breast cancer. Since 2003, the Pisoni Family has donated over $100,000 towards breast cancer research.
