Terroir: The Eola-Amity Hills AVA lies about 15 miles southwest of the winery, where the Van Duzer Corridor has a significant influence on the vineyard climate. It is a notch through the Coast Range that allows cool ocean winds to flow in from the west, dropping temperatures dramatically during late summer afternoons, which helps to retain firm acidity in the fruit.

2014 Vintage: 2014 was an excellent growing season with an exceptional fruit set, dry weather through September, and an abundant harvest of ripe, healthy fruit. It was a rare vintage that gave us full ripeness, reasonable alcohol and good acidity. Overall, it was a warm vintage, but the alcohol conversion rates were low, which resulted in wines that are both very ripe and very elegant.

Winemaking: The grapes were sourced from the Bieze, En Gedi, and Three Angels vineyards. The vineyards are all dry farmed and sustainable. The grapes are manually harvested. They are 100% destemmed into a steel fermenter. The wine naturally ferments with native yeast. The wine is transferred to barriques (25% new) where it matures for 18 months. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in barrel.

About the Winery: Located in Oregon’s Northern Willamette Valley, J. Christopher is a small winery that specializes in Pinot Noir made in the traditional style of Burgundy, and in Sauvignon Blanc modeled after the great wines of Sancerre. The winery is co-owned by Jay Somers, who has been making wine in Oregon for more than 20 years, and Ernst Loosen, owner of the Dr. Loosen estate in Germany. Their shared philosophy is to produce wines in an Old World style that emphasizes focus, length and balance.

    Rating: 92 (6/1/2017)

(Editors' Choice) This juicy wine feels substantial, with a concentrated palate of blueberry and blackberry fruit. It's got grip and detail, with threads of coffee grounds and smoke. It finishes with a hint of metallic earth. All is in balance, and the highlights are gently applied.

Powerful aromas of cherry cola and black raspberry pick up hints of smoky Indian spices and woodsmoke in the glass. Sappy and concentrated; gentle acidity provides lift and definition to bitter cherry and dark berry flavors. Delivers very good depth and power, in the style of this vintage, offering solid closing punch and length and dusty tannins that sneak in late.
