People: Gonzague Maurice, Owner & Winemaker
Viticulture: Practicing Organic
Owner and winemaker Gonzague Maurice bought Chateau de Grandchamp in Montagne-Saint-Emilion in 2005. The chateau has vineyards in Saint-Emilion, Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion and Lalande de Pomerol totaling 32 acres.
Le Pavillon de Saint-Jacques is the wine Gonzague crafts from his vineyards in Lalande de Pomerol. The Lalande de Pomerol AOC is located east of Pomerol and north of Saint-Emilion on the right bank of the Dordogne River. The vineyard is in the town of Neac facing the town of Pomerol and is 12 acres. The average age of the vines is 35 years. The soil is fine gravel on clay. Gonzague uses natural viticulture, and the estate will be recognized organic in 2012. Grass is sown between vine rows and ploughing is done in alternating rows. Gonzague's sole objective in the vineyard is to obtain perfectly ripe and clean fruit. Triage is done in both the vineyard and the cellar to ensure the highest quality grapes.
