The Loibenberg Vineyard

The Loibenberg Vineyard
Country of Origin: Austria
Location: Unterloiben, Wachau
People: Knoll Family, Owners | Emmerich Knoll III, Winemaker
Supplier: http://www.circovino.com

Emmerich Knoll III, an exhuberent spokesperson for the Wachau region, farms the family’s 15 hectares of land and crafts wines that clearly express the Unterloiben terroir where some of Austria’s most famous vineyards live. This family run winery is a treasure that has been estate owned and operated for over three generations.  The majority of the Knoll’s vineyard plantings are dedicated to Gruner Veltliner and Riesling, but the family also farms small amounts of Rivaner, Gelber Traminer, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. A member of “Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus,” an association of Wachau winemakers who follow strict quality control rules, the Knoll Winery upholds stringent farming and winemaking standards that vintage after vintage propel their wines to the top of restaurant, collector and critic’s lists. Knoll wines are easily recognized by their distinct label that depicts an ornate image of St. Urban the patron saint of winemakers and vineyards. While in the Wachau, one can also dine at the family’s acclaimed, 400 year old restaurant, Loibnerhof Familie Knoll.

Emmerich Knoll (500 ml) 2008 Traminer Smaragd
Rating: 88

Almost as intensely spicy as an Alsace Gewürztraminer, this is a rich wine that remains essentially dry. Ripe peach and lychee are right up front, giving a fine intensity. This wine would work well with blue cheese or a pâté.

Emmerich Knoll 2009 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Loibenberg
Rating: 93

Medium green-yellow. Ripe Golden Delicious and pear aromas are complicated by with subtle notes of tobacco, black pepper and dark slate. Then more open and generous in the mouth than the nose would suggest, with the fruit flavors nicely framed in a taut acid structure. Intense apricot and minerals linger on the finish of this harmonious wine. Offers exceptional potential for further development. Drink now to 2024.

Emmerich Knoll 2009 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Vinothefullung
Rating: 93

Medium green-yellow. Quite restrained on the nose, only hinting at delicate mango and peach nuances with subtle tobacco, pepper and lentil. Despite its muscular power, this wine makes a very agile impression owing to its sharply chiseled structure. An elegant and harmonious veltliner that will gain immensely with bottle aging. Drink to 2024.

Emmerich Knoll 2009 Riesling Smaragd Kellerberg
Rating: 92

Medium green-yellow. Seductive aromas of ripe peach, subtle blossom honey and mandarin orange. Becomes more exotic in the mouth, adding papaya and lime to the mix. Sweet peach and papaya fruit is lifted by extraordinarily elegant lemony acidity. Finishes with palate-staining fruit and intense wet rock minerality. Wonderful to drink now, but should be even better between 2014 and 2024.

Emmerich Knoll 2009 Riesling Smaragd Loibenberg
Rating: 92

Medium green-yellow. A fragrant nose seduces with juicy peach, apricot blossom and hints of lime and pineapple. Sweetly extracted fruit is nicely framed by the wine's taut acid structure, remaining playful through the long, luxurious finish. Although quite approachable today, this should continue to evolve positively in bottle over the next five years and age easily until 2024.
