What is a Blackbilly?
BLACKBILLY is the name for the extraordinarily distinctive Yakka Tree that is unique to Australia. It has spiky leaves and a unique spear shaped flower. Periodically bush fires change the Australian bushland and burn the "Blackbillys" into their distinctive shape. Unique spear shaped flowers grow out as part of the regeneration of the plant.

The Blackbilly Estate is located in McLaren Vale, 60kms south of Adelaide. The Mclaren Vale wine region is one of Australia's first wine producing areas. Its boundaries to the west are the waters of St. Vincent's Gulf, east are Clarendon and the Mount Bold reserve, north is Reynella and finally to the south are the Sellicks Hill Range.

Winemaker Nick Haselgrove is a noteworthy character from the McLaren Vale region, with over 21 vintages of Australian and International winemaking experience. Nick's talent for the art of winemaking is part of his guarantee to always provide the best possible quality and value for the wine drinkers of the Blackbilly wines.

McLaren Vale: Sand over clay. Alluvial loams. Cracking Biscay clay and Terra Rosa types on selected parts of vineyards. Fleurieu: Mainly Sandy loams with some clay soils.

Blackbilly 2006 Shiraz
Rating: 89

Tasted and recommended, but no tasting note given.

Blackbilly 2007 Pinot Gris
Rating: 88

Pale yellow. Racy, finely etched citrus and orchard fruit aromas are complemented by dusty minerals and pink peppercorn. A mix of nervy citrus and rounder melons on the palate, with tangy minerality adding lift and cut. Finishes with repeating melon and grapefruit notes and good persistence.

Blackbilly 2006 Shiraz
Rating: 90

Bright and jazzy, delivering a refreshing mouthful of huckleberry and currant flavors, picking up coffee and pepper notes on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2016. 600 cases imported

Blackbilly 2007 Pinot Gris

Fresh and lively, with pretty melon and pear flavors that linger on the open-textured finish. Drink now. 800 cases imported.

Deep, bright ruby. Very syrah on the nose: dark berries, cured meat, smoky herbs, minerals and dried flowers. A sexy anise quality adds complexity to powerful blackberry and boysenberry flavors, with dusty tannins adding focus and grip. Pretty interesting stuff, with impressive finishing complexity and lingering smokiness. Stephen Tanzer International Wine Cellar, Sept/Oct2008
