Maysara Vineyard & Lake
Maysara Vineyard & Lake
Country of Origin: USA
Location: McMinnville
People: Moe & Flora Momtazi, Owners | Tahmiene Momtazi, Winemaker

In 1997, Moe and Flora Momtazi purchased 532 acres of an abandoned wheat farm in the foothills Southwest of McMinnville, Oregon. Their interest was to farm pinot noir grapes, and to do it organically. In March 1998, the first three vineyard blocks were planted consisting of 13 acres total. From the beginning, the location had promise. The unique niche in the foothills of Oregons Coastal Range separates them from valley weather influence. The Maysara winery and estate Momtazi Vineyard are committed to capturing the complete expression of the land and conveying it through superior quality in every bottle. They practice low-impact organic and biodynamic farming methods to ensure the health of the vines for generations.

Maysara is vegetarian. No egg or fish products are used.

Maysara 2008 Pinot Noir '3 Degrees '
Rating: 88

Firm in texture, with earthy tones around dark berry and spice flavors, lingering against mildly grippy tannins. Drink now through 2014.

- The Wine Spectator (9/3/2010)

Maysara 2007 Pinot Noir 'Jamsheed,' Willamette Valley
Rating: 88

A moderately pitched and layered nose of ripe Pinot fruit with earth hints introduces pliant, round and vibrant barely medium-bodied flavors that possess an attractively silky mouth feel and terminate in a clean and dry finish of reasonably good length. I like the delivery as the structural elements are more completely integrated than in the Asha but there is less depth here. Still, I prefer harmony to completeness and this explains the marginally higher rating between the two. Note that this could easily be enjoyed now if desired.

- Burghound (1/1/2010)

Maysara 2007 Pinot Noir 'Asha'
Rating: 87

Light ruby. A very fresh and expressive nose speaks of high-toned red and blue Pinot fruit aromas that are nuanced by hints of briar and forest floor that are also reflected by the supple, detailed and lilting barely middle weight flavors that possess reasonably good depth on the slightly tangy but delicious finish that offers moderate persistence. I like the underlying sense of energy but this is not for those who prefer lush and opulent Pinots as the tangy finish will strike some as too much of a good thing.

Maysara 2006 Pinot Noir, 'Delara', WV
Rating: 89

The differences between the 2006 and 2007 vintages are immediately evident as this trades ripeness for elegance and the fruit tones are darker as well plus there is a discreet touch of wood. There is also more body and volume to the sappy and mouth coating medium weight flavors that possess hints of mocha and poached plum on the solidly structured finish. While this is by no means super ripe, it will most please those who enjoy higher levels of ripeness in their Pinots. I should note that it's a bit too ripe for me but it's well made and it's not warm.

Maysara 2007 Pinot Noir 'Jamsheed,' Willamette Valley
Rating: 90

Polished and lively, with pretty currant, plum and floral aromas and flavors on a light, racy frame, finishing with mouthwatering acidity and plenty of fruit. Drink now through 2012. 4,000 cases made.

- The Wine Spectator (12/31/2009)

Maysara 2006 Pinot Noir, 'Delara', WV
Rating: 88

Bright and jazzy, with a polished sheen to the distinctive currant and guava flavors, lingering on the peppery finish. Drink now through 2011. 300 cases made.

- The Wine Spectator (11/1/2009)

Maysara 2008 Rose of Pinot Noir 'Roseena'
Rating: 88

Bright, medium pink. Wild strawberry and blood orange on the nose. Lively red berry flavors are gently sweet, with refreshing back end-lift and snap. The blood orange note repeats on the long, incisive finish. This is energetic enough to work by itself but also has the punch to handle assertively seasoned dishes.

- International Wine Cellar (6/1/2009)

Maysara 2006 Pinot Noir, 'Delara', WV
Rating: 90

The 2006 Pinot Noir Delara is a barrel selection of which 16 were chosen with 56% of the oak being new. Dark ruby-colored, the wine has an enticing nose of black cherry, black raspberry, pain grille, mineral, and spice box. This leads to a layered wine with plump, savory fruit, some structure, good concentration, and excellent length. Give it 3-4 years to evolve and drink it from 2012 to 2021.

- The Wine Advocate (10/1/2008)

Maysara 2008 Pinot Blanc
Rating: 89

The pleasant white has a scent of quince and white cherries. Its flavors are broad and grapey, with an ample texture that would complement white sausages.

- Wine & Spirits (2/1/2010)

Maysara 2007 Pinot Noir, 'Jamsheed', Willamette Valley
Rating: Bargain

“It's not very often that you find excellent Pinot Noir for $25 or less, but these three Oregon examples (two of them at 90 points) are worth the search. All three are made in reasonable quantities, so you should be able to track them down. Maysara Jamsheed Pinot. McMinnville: light, racy, currant, plum, flowers.

- The Wine Spectator (9/10/2009)

Maysara 2007 'Asha' Pinot Noir
Rating: 93

This elegant, youthful wine, a first release for Maysara, leads with a faint scent of violets and a hint of bergamot. The black cherry and plum flavors are still primary a dark, brambly McMinnville wine with marvelous tension and drive. That energy makes it a delight to drink, but will also reward the patient.

- Wine & Spirits (12/30/2009)

Maysara 2007 'Asha' Pinot Noir
Rating: 89

Light and lilting, with pretty raspberry and cranberry aromas and flavors, picking up a floral note as the finish sails along. Drink now through 2011. 600 cases made.

- The Wine Spectator (12/31/2009)

Maysara 2007 'Asha' Pinot Noir
Rating: 89

The 2007 Pinot Noir Asha was aged in 45% new French oak. It is denser and richer than the Estate Cuvee. It will offer peak drinking through 2017. All of the Maysara Winery Pinot Noirs are sourced from their large, biodynamically certified vineyard in McMinnville. Maysara also sells fruit to a number of well-known clients.

- The Wine Advocate (10/31/2009)

Maysara 2007 Pinot Noir, Estate Cuvee, WV
Rating: 87

Light red. Redcurrant and strawberry on the nose. Rose and blood orange qualities come up with air and carry onto the palate, adding energy to the sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors. Light-bodied and nicely focused, but comes up just a bit short on the finish.

- International Wine Cellar (6/1/2009)

Maysara 2007 Pinot Noir, Estate Cuvee, WV
Rating: 88

This youthful wine leads with scents of spiced strawberry jam and dusty earth. Its flavors veer toward blackberry, with hefty tannins that suggest the wine is still unformed and will benefit from aging.

- Wine & Spirits (2/1/2009)

Maysara 2006 'Roseena' Rose
Rating: 88

The 2006 Roseena Rose is an interesting blend of 50% Pinot Blanc and 50% Pinot Noir. Light salmon colored, it offers an attractive perfume of strawberry and rhubarb followed by a crisp, dry Rose with excellent flavors and a lengthy finish. It is the perfect picnic wine. Unfortunately, the other Maysara wines I tasted were not up to this standard.

- The Wine Advocate (10/1/2007)

Maysara 2006 Pinot Noir, 'Jamsheed
Rating: 90

Light and fragrant, with pretty floral overtones to the cherry and roasted meat flavors, lingering softly on the seamless finish.

- The Wine Spectator (12/15/2008)

Maysara 2006 Pinot Noir, 'Jamsheed
Rating: 86

Dark ruby-colored, it offers up a pleasant aroma of spice box and black fruits in a straightforward style. It is an easy going wine for drinking over the next several years.

- The Wine Advocate (10/30/2008)

Maysara 2006 Pinot Noir, 'Jamsheed
Rating: 89

"Maysara embraced biodynamic viticulture well before it became fashionable, but it is rare to find a Pinot Noir from anywhere that is biodynamically farmed and loaded with such diverse and complex flavors, at such a budget price. The sweet red fruits run through the gamut of berries, spices and light herb. Tannins are tight and tamed, giving the finish a firm foundation with just the right hints of earth and rock." - PG

- The Wine Enthusiast (11/1/2008)

Maysara 2007 Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley
Rating: 88

"Tart, juicy and deep, this is a wine for acidity-lovers who want sweet fruit to compensate. It's perfectly balanced, tangy and sharp, but also complex and detailed. Pineapple, green apple and suggestions of citrus layer a groundwork of fruit and acid; there is good length and hints of fresh herb running through the finish." - PG

- The Wine Enthusiast (11/01/2008)

Maysara 2007 Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley
Rating: 89

Light silver. Fresh and racy, displaying clean lemon and grapefruit aromas along with white pepper and fresh herbs. Light and precise, offering mouthwatering citrus and green apple flavors, with bracing minerality adding focus. Precise and very easy to drink.

- International Wine Cellar (04/01/2008)

Maysara 2006 Pinot Noir, Estate Cuvée, WV
Rating: 90

A dark win- McMinnville's imprint- with hits of India ink and blackberries so dense at the outset it resembles syrah. It's lighter, more pinotlike on the palate, with a plumy, black currant flavor. A substantial red for a wild mushroom tart.

- Wine & Spirits (4/1/2008)

Maysara 2005 Pinot Noir, 'Jamsheed', Willamette Valley
Rating: 90

Light and tangy, a crispy, juicy mouthful of raspberry, cherry and hints of beet and floral notes as the finish sails on and on against refined tannins. -H.S.

Maysara Winery 2003 Pinot Noir, Estate Cuvée

Earthy, spicy notes add extra nuances to the berry and currant fruit in this firm textured Pinot. Best from 2008 through 2012. 900 cases.

- The Wine Spectator (12/15/2006)

Maysara Winery 2004 Pinot Noir, 'Delara'
Rating: 90

Lithe and distinctive for its sassafras and espresso nuances around a lithe core of blackberry and plum flavors, lingering against crisp tannins. Best from 2008 through 2012. 470 cases made.

- The Wine Spectator (11/15/2006)

Maysara Winery 2002 Pinot Noir, Estate Cuvée , Willamette Valley
Rating: 91

...is outstanding. Its aromas of sweet black cherries and pipe tobacco lead to a medium to full-bodied personality that is plush, concentrated, and long. Candied, spicy dark fruits dominate this fine offering's character. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. Robert Parker
