"Brothers Bob and Jim Varner deliver serious value with their Foxglove wines. Year in year out, these are some of the most delicious, budget friendly wines readers will come across."

Just like the great estates of the Old World, the Varner brothers produce a second label Foxglove for everyday drinking. Beginning with their first vintage in 1991, Bob Varner sources the grapes from a variety of places, all of which are along the Central Coast. Mild winters, cool, foggy summers, and clay-loam soils produce a combination of flavors that have been described as "textbook Central Coast." The three wines are unoaked to preserve freshness of each varietal. They are produced in steel tanks without malolactic fermentation, which showcases a different minimalism approach.

  • Foxglove 2014 Chardonnay, Central Coast
    Rating: 90 (7/1/2016)

The highlight in this range from Foxglove, the 2014 Chardonnay packs a serious punch for the money. Bright, juicy and exuberant, the Foxglove Chardonnay will thrill readers looking for a budget-priced Chardonnay. Lemon peel, white flowers and mint meld together in a rich, beautifully layered Chardonnay long on class. Aging in steel and blocked malolactic fermentation keep the flavors bright, but there is no shortage of depth or intensity. This is a fabulous wine, especially considering its modest price.

    Rating: 90 (10/28/2016)

Made by some of the best Chardonnay winemakers in California, Jim and Bob Varner, the value-priced 2014 Chardonnay released under the Foxglove label sports a light gold color to go with exotic notes of pineapples, melon, citrus blossom, spice and hints of green herbs. Supple, forward and straight-up delicious on the palate, with no hard edges and a clean, classy profile, it's a steal at the price and will drink nicely for a year or three.
  • Foxglove 2015 Zinfandel, Paso Robles
    Rating: 89 (9/1/2017)

The 2015 Zinfandel is bright, refreshing and full of energy. Sweet red cherry fruit, floral notes and tobacco are all given an extra kick of aromatic and acid-driven brightness. Medium in body and lithe, the 2015 delivers serious quality for the money. The 2015 is 80% Zinfandel and 20% Petite Sirah. Don't miss it.
  • Foxglove 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles
    Rating: 89 (7/6/2018)

Foxglove's 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is gorgeous. Even better, it is also one of the very best values in California Cabernet readers will come across. A rush of super-ripe dark cherry, tobacco, licorice and plum give the 2017 its racy personality. Voluptuous in the glass, with silky tannins and soft contours, the 2017 will be impossible to resist upon release.
