"Brothers Bob and Jim Varner make delicious, value-priced California wines under their Foxglove label. These wines deliver superb quality for the money."

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media, 7/2016
"Brothers Bob and Jim Varner deliver serious value with their Foxglove wines. Year in year out, these are some of the most delicious, budget friendly wines readers will come across."

Just like the great estates of the Old World, the Varner brothers produce a second label Foxglove for everyday drinking. Beginning with their first vintage in 1991, Bob Varner sources the grapes from a variety of places, all of which are along the Central Coast. Mild winters, cool, foggy summers, and clay-loam soils produce a combination of flavors that have been described as "textbook Central Coast." The three wines are unoaked to preserve freshness of each varietal. They are produced in steel tanks without malolactic fermentation, which showcases a different minimalism approach.

Reviews

  • Foxglove 2014 Chardonnay, Central Coast
    Vinous
    Rating: 90 (7/1/2016)

The highlight in this range from Foxglove, the 2014 Chardonnay packs a serious punch for the money. Bright, juicy and exuberant, the Foxglove Chardonnay will thrill readers looking for a budget-priced Chardonnay. Lemon peel, white flowers and mint meld together in a rich, beautifully layered Chardonnay long on class. Aging in steel and blocked malolactic fermentation keep the flavors bright, but there is no shortage of depth or intensity. This is a fabulous wine, especially considering its modest price.
  • Foxglove 2014 Zinfandel, Paso Robles
    Vinous
    Rating: 89 (7/1/2016)

The 2014 Zinfandel is another delicious, value-priced red from the Varner brothers. Pinot-influenced aromatics meld into a core of sweet red berry fruit. Rich, deep and luscious in a fruit-driven style, the Zinfandel hits all the right notes.
  • Foxglove 2014 Chardonnay, Central Coast
    The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 90 (10/28/2016)

Made by some of the best Chardonnay winemakers in California, Jim and Bob Varner, the value-priced 2014 Chardonnay released under the Foxglove label sports a light gold color to go with exotic notes of pineapples, melon, citrus blossom, spice and hints of green herbs. Supple, forward and straight-up delicious on the palate, with no hard edges and a clean, classy profile, it's a steal at the price and will drink nicely for a year or three.
  • Foxglove 2014 Zinfandel, Paso Robles
    The Wine Advocate
    Rating: 88 (10/28/2016)

The 2014 Zinfandel is a brambly, spice, raspberry and blackberry-scented effort that has medium-bodied richness, an upfront, sexy texture and no hard edges. Drink this balanced, incredibly enjoyable Zinfandel over the coming couple of years.
  • Foxglove 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles
    Vinous
    Rating: 89 (9/28/2017)

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is another superb value from Foxglove. Dark red cherry, sweet tobacco, licorice and mint are pushed forward in this mid-weight, refreshing Paso Robles Cabernet. Aging in steel keeps the flavors vibrant and also helps keep the price ridiculously low by California standards.
