PinotFile: Haden Fig

Haden Fig is Erin and Jordan Nuccio’s realization of a dream to produce exceptional Pinot Noir from the Willamette valley. They secure the best fruit possible from organic, biodynamic and sustainably farmed vineyards, including their certified organic estate Le Puits Sec Vineyard. Everything possible is done to preserve and highlight what was created in the vineyard because if you start with great fruit, you end with amazing wine.

Erin’s passion for wine grew from his passion for food. While awaiting the start of culinary school, he worked at a prominent wine shop in Washington DC. It was this job that changed his interest into a passion. He threw himself into the business, eventually becoming manager and buyer for a wine shop and an adjacent restaurant and wine bar. He and his wife Jordan moved to California where Erin studied winemaking and viticulture in Napa and Sonoma. This was an irreplaceable experience for him. During this time, he realized that to fulfill his dream of making the most interesting, balanced, and complex wine possible in the U.S., he needed to move to the Willamette Valley. Soon after the move, Erin met Russ and Mary Raney of Evesham Wood Winery and his suspicions about the potential for exceptional Pinot Noir were confirmed. He started Haden Fig while working at Evesham Wood. In 2010, Erin bought Evensham Wood.

The Owl
During her work at the Portland Audubon Society as a volunteer veterinarian, Jordan was enamored with the Northern Saw-Whet owl. This owl is a natural predator for vineyard pests and an essential part of a healthy symbiotic vineyard and ecosystem. Because of this, the Saw-Whet owl was chosen for the label as a symbol of their commitment to sustainable agriculture. The Saw-Whet pictured on the label was created by Eli Halpin for Haden Fig. Eli Halpin paints vibrant, captivating oil paintings; view her work.

An overtly spicy and rose petal-inflected nose is composed primarily of red cherry and cool plum scents. Like the Cancilla this possesses a really lovely mid-palate mouth feel with both good energy and definition to the medium-bodied flavors that deliver very good depth and solid if not exceptional length on the compact and tight finish. I suspect that this will better harmonize in time as it’s presently pretty tightly wound.

A cool, airy and restrained nose flashes plenty of floral and herbal tea characters on the high-toned aromas of red pinot and cherry. I very much like the mouth feel of the delicious, delineated and punchy medium weight flavors that evidence good verve on the well-balanced and persistent finish that offers a bit more overall depth. Lovely and worth checking out.
